World Series MLB Betting: Red Sox Hire Bobby Valentine as Manager

The Boston Red Sox have selected Bobby Valentine as the team's new manager, according to an ESPNBoston.com report.

The report states that Valentine was offered the job Tuesday and accepted it. He is in Japan and is scheduled to return to the U.S. on Wednesday.

Valentine will replace Terry Francona, who stepped down following the Red Sox's late-season collapse.

Valentine and Gene Lamont were believed to be the final candidates Boston was considering. The club wanted to make a hire before next Monday, the first day of the winter meetings in Dallas.

The 61-year-old Valentine has managed the Texas Rangers and New York Mets for 15 years. He won a Japan Series in 2005 with the Chiba Lotte Marines.

Lamont spent six seasons as a third-base coach under Jim Leyland in Detroit. He held the same role with the Red Sox in 2001.
